RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazilian businessman Christovao Marinho, owner of the Rei school chain, was shot dead in a parking lot in Rio de Janeiro state's Niteroi, local police told the media on Thursday.

Marinho was killed by two armed men while he was waiting for his assistant to bring his car into the parking lot on Wednesday. The criminals shot Marinho three times, and he died at the scene.

The criminals then left with his car and some documents. His assistant survived unharmed.

His ex-wife, Clara Marinho, said she did not believe he was a robbery victim.

"That was no robbery. I talked to him today (Wednesday) about my daughter's birthday party, which would be on November 1, and he was arguing with someone on the phone," she told a local TV station in an interview.

The case was still under investigation.
