Updated: 2008-09-22 06:30 JOHANNESBURG -- An acting president of South Africa is expected to be announced on Monday, the country's African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Mathews Phosa said on a televised debate on Sunday. "What we want to do tomorrow is announce the next acting state president," Phosa said on the SABC1 current affairs program Asikhulume. "And he or she will announce the next Cabinet." He said the ANC wants the Cabinet to stay. "We want the Cabinet to stay. We are very happy if they stay and we do these things together." Phosa was speaking as Mbeki was briefing his Cabinet at a special meeting at the Union Buildings in Pretoria after being recalled by the ANC on Saturday during its national executive committee. "Let me tell you in very simple terms, we have lost confidence in Mbeki...Polokwane was a vote of no confidence in him as well," Phosa said during a debate with political analysts Stephen Friedman and Professor Shadrack Gutto, according to South African Press Association. |
