Updated: 2008-09-04 14:15 Taro Aso, secretary-general of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), speaks during a news conference at the LDP headquarters in Tokyo September 2, 2008. Aso said on Tuesday he was qualified to succeed Yasuo Fukuda, who abruptly resigned as prime minister on Monday. The resignation announcement came a month after Fukuda installed his most widely expected successor, former Foreign Minister Taro Aso, as secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, in a Cabinet shake-up aimed at boosting support for the government.
