MANILA -- An oil refinery worker was killed and another was left unconscious after being exposed to toxic gas at the Philippines' largest oil and gas complex, police and company officials said on Monday.

"One worker was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital due to suffocation," Bataan province police chief Manuel Gaerlan said after the accident at Petron Corp's refinery, adding a second worker remained unconscious.

Operations were not affected at the 180,000 barrels per day refinery in Bataan, the only refinery operated by Petron, the country's biggest oil retailer.

"It is suspected that both personnel were exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas while draining a collecting drum of the sour water facility," a Petron statement said.
