5.8 magnitude quake hits New Zealand North Island

Updated: 2008-09-01 14:45 WELLINGTON -- An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck New Zealand's North Island on Monday, the GNS Science said. The quake, which occurred at 1:21 p.m. local time (1:21 GMT Monday), was centered 10 km southeast of the central North Island town of Turangi and 260 km north of Wellington at a depth of 80 km. No casualties or damage were reported. It was felt throughout the central North Island and as far south as the Kapiti Coast. |
