Lee Urges Japan to learn from history

South Korea's president called on Tokyo on Friday to avoid repeating the mistakes.

"Japan should face up to history and refrain from making the mistake of repeating the unfortunate past again today," President Lee Myung-bak said in a speech commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the Korean peninsula's liberation from Japan's colonial rule.

In a speech before an estimated 27,000 people near the former royal palace in Seoul, Lee also called for a stronger South Korea to prevent any repeat of the 1910-45 colonial occupation.

"We should make our country rich and powerful with our own hands. By doing so, no country will dare covet our territory," said Lee, wearing the traditional Korean "Hanbok" dress.

Ties between Japan and South Korea have been strained over Tokyo's alleged moves to gloss over wartime atrocities.
