ANKARA, Turkey -- A news agency says Turkish police have shot dead a man who was trying to plant a bomb near a police station.

The Dogan news agency says the man was killed in the shootout early Monday after a police officer noticed the man as he planted plastic explosives near the police station in Antakya. The city is near the border with Syria.

There was no information on the identity of the man.

Kurdish rebels seeking autonomy from Turkey are active in the region and have targeted Turkish security forces with bomb attacks in the past.
