Muslims should be inspired for peaceful world

JAKARTA  -- Muslims worldwide must vigorously uphold Islam as a way of life, not a way of conflict. An effort of building a culture of peace and dialogue should be made to avoid the trend of aggression and ignorance that pervades the Muslim world, Hasyim Muzadi, leader of the largest Muslim body in the country said here on Friday.

"I am confident that if we work in concert, we may uncover an effective and durable solution to these problems," Hasyim Muzadi, general chairman of the Indonesian Central Board of Nahdhatul Ulama, made the remarks during the closing session of the 3rd International Conference of Islamic Scholars on Friday.

Deep rooted-challenge on the issue must be conducted by a diagnosis such as self-criticism and conscious examination.

"Then on the basis of our introspection, we could overhaul traditional behaviors that become dysfunctional with a view to fostering greater openness, tolerance and mutual compassion as taught by Islam," he said.

Muzadi also stated how Muslims worldwide had been very busy with unfinished business which should have been resolved for an effort of peaceful world.

The three-day conference attended by 350 participants throughout the world including Buddhist dominant countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.
