Spain, Ecuador sign defense cooperation protocol

MADRID -- Spain and Ecuador signed a defense cooperation protocol here Thursday in a bid to boost bilateral ties.

The agreement was signed by Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon and her visiting Ecuadorian counterpart Javier Ponce, a Spanish Defense Ministry communique said.

According to the agreement, the two countries will cooperate on a variety of defense issues, including increased exchange of views on defense policy and scientific technology, frequent meetings between weapons and equipment experts, and joint participation in investigation programs.

The armed forces of either country will also exchange information and experience on areas like legal framework, democratic control and organization of the military forces.

The two sides pledged to work for peacekeeping, search and rescue, and humanitarian operations, as well as crisis management and promotion of scientific contacts, the communique said.
