Updated: 2008-07-13 11:52 The last direct negotiations, under the US sponsorship, broke down eight years ago. Speaking of Iran, Assad said as far as he knew the Islamic Republic was not seeking atomic weapons. He said Sarkozy had asked him to use his influence with Iran to help ease Tehran's nuclear standoff with the West. He said he will pass on to Iranian leaders France's doubt about Tehran's nuclear program. The Syrian leader further warned against any non-political solutions to the Iranian nuclear issue, saying he could not imagine any such other types of solution because the "consequences will be dangerous." The Syrian president added that his country has always been opposed to the development of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. |
