Philippines suffers $98 mn damage from typhoon

Updated: 2008-06-24 22:24 MANILA -- Typhoon "Fengshen" caused an estimated damage of 4.39 billion pesos (US$98 million) in the Philippines during its rampage over the weekend, the country's disaster-relief agency said on Tuesday. Infrastructure damage was pegged at 770 million pesos (US$17.3 million) while damage to elementary and high school buildings were worth about 212 million pesos (US$4.75 million) , said Glenn Rabonza, executive director of the Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Committee. Damage to agricultural production was placed at 3.3 billion pesos (US$74 million), Rabonza said. According to Agriculture undersecretary Jesus Emmanuel Paras, of the 3.3 billion in damage about 2.994 billion pesos (US$67.1 million) covers fisheries and crops lost in the country's central Panay island. For his part, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus reported that the damage to 351 public schools have been pegged at 212 million pesos. He also said that classes remains suspended in some typhoon-hit cities due to the flooding. |
