SANTIAGO -- Forty-three percent of Chilean students between 13 and 18 years of age affirm that they use drugs at school, the National Council for Narcotic Control (Conace) said Monday.

According to a latest poll by Conace, 53 percent of those who purchase drugs do so at school or in the vicinity of their school, an increase from the 41 percent recorded in 2005.

Teenagers obtain 44 percent of the drugs they consume from social gatherings such as parties and discotheques, while 28 percent are obtained at school or in nearby areas.

Drug consumption among students has been stable, according to the poll. Conace said 15.7 percent of students use marijuana, while cocaine and base paste are consumed by 2.9 percent and 2.5 percent of students respectively.
