Updated: 2008-06-10 11:15 RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Monday that Brazil, which favors the production of biofuel, will win the war against those countries interested in maintaining the world's dependence on oil. In his weekly radio program, Lula spoke of the importance of his attendance at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) summit in Rome last week, where he asserted that Brazil does not fear criticism of its ethanol program. The Brazilian president also said it is necessary to improve the working conditions of those who produce sugarcane, the main raw material for ethanol production in the country. Lula said the Brazilian government and entrepreneurs are studying a new type of employment contract that provides better conditions to sugarcane cutters, and increased mechanization. Lula added that he will form partnerships with countries in Africa, Central America, the Caribbean and South America to produce biofuel. |
