Japan's party to introduce censure against Fukuda

Updated: 2008-06-05 11:36 TOKYO -- Japan's main opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) decided Thursday to introduce a censure motion against Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, local media reported, citing DPJ sources. The nonbinding motion is to be submitted at the opposition- dominated House of Councilors early next week, said the reports. If put forward at the upper house, the censure motion is likely to be adopted as the Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party, two other opposition parties, have indicated their support for the move. The DPJ had decided to quit proposing such an motion before the party leadership concluded that what is important is to show the DPJ's stance to challenge the Fukuda Cabinet. "What's left to consider is the issue of timing," a DPJ official was quoted as saying. As a nonbinding motion, it is not likely to prompt a resignation of the Fukuda Cabinet or a dissolution of the House of Representatives for a general election. |
