BELGRADE -- Serbia recalled its ambassador to the Czech Republic Thursday in protest against the latter's recognition of independence of its breakaway province of Kosovo.

Serbian Foreign Ministry announced in a protest note to the Czech government that in accordance with the action plan adopted by the government earlier this year, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic had ordered the immediate recall of Serbian Ambassador Vladimir Veres from the Czech Republic.

The ambassador should leave the country within 48 hours since the delivery of the protest note and return to Serbia for further consultations.

The Czech Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that its government decided to recognize Kosovo as an independent state, making it the 41st country to recognize the southern Serbian province, which unilaterally declared independence on Feb. 17.
