BEIRUT - Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said on late Sunday that political moderation is the only way to reach an agreement in Lebanon and resolve the current crisis.
Berri, a main leader of the Lebanese opposition bloc, made the remarks in a talk show on the Lebanese television station New TV.
"I will wait the results of the Arab Summit and in case of the Arab initiative's failure, I will call for national dialogue to discuss the solutions," he said.
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlock since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since November 24 of 2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
A long-awaited parliamentary session to elect a new president to succeed Lahoud has been postponed for 16 times till March 25.
Berri also hinted that the parliament session scheduled for March 25 might be postponed for another time.
"There is nothing new to avoid a new postponement of the session on Tuesday, but we will exert every effort between now and Tuesday," Berri said.
The presidency deadlock deepened the Lebanese political crisis as fears are mounting that failure in reaching a deal on the presidential candidate could result in more violence in the country.
