LIMA - Peru's police seized 1.5 tons of cocaine and arrested four suspected drug traffickers Friday in northwestern part of the country, police authority said Saturday.
Police said they carried out the anti-drug operation in the coast off Caleta Cherrepe, in Lambayeque province. The four suspects are Ecuadoreans and they tried to ship the drugs to the United States and Europe.
In addition, police also confiscated two vehicles, some guns and telecommunication equipment.
Peru is part of the so-called "Silver Triangle" in South America. Last year, the Peruvian police cracked four international drug trafficking groups and seized about 20 tons of drugs.
