SHANGHAI - Chinese diver Qiu Bo won his first 10m platform world championship title with a spotless performance on Sunday, ending his country's campaign at the Shanghai Worlds with a history-making all-gold sweep.
Qiu, who achieved two full scores during the six-dive final, claimed the gold medal with a total of 585.45 points. It was Qiu's second title at this event at the Oriental Sports Center.
David Boudia, of the United States and Germany's Klein Sascha won the silver and bronze medals.
"I am excited about today's victory. It's a big step in my career," said the 18-year-old Qiu, who won a silver medal at the last Worlds in Rome two years ago.
"I performed pretty consistently today, and wasn't affected by the wind. I just need to be more focused."
China hasn't enjoyed such success at a World Championships or Olympic Games for 5 years, and the long-awaited glory enabled the powerhouse to win all 10 gold medals in Shanghai.
However, Zhou Jihong, team leader for China, is still wary about maintaining dominance after a Chinese diver, Zhou Luxin, finished a disappointing 10th in the final.
"I am really happy to achieve that sweep, but I still feel worried," Zhou Jihong said. "Our opponents have become stronger in technique. We have to toughen up mentally."
The 23-year-old Zhou Luxin, who won the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said he might have put too much pressure on himself in the final.
"Maybe I just wanted it too much," he said. "It's about the mind, not the technique. Anyway, I won't give up until the London Games."
