Two people died and over 100 people were injured in Spain in the celebrations that followed the country's first ever World Cup win, local officials said today.

In Algeciras in southwestern Spain a man died last night after falling from a veranda, said a spokeswoman for the representative of Spain's central government in Cadiz. "He was watching the match with friends. After Spain scored, they realized that he was no longer with them and they found him on the ground after falling from the balcony," she said.

Over 100 people were injured, including 74 in second-city Barcelona, in disturbances near the site of giant outdoor screens that broadcast the match.

Twenty-one people required hospital care in Barcelona and another 21 were arrested, local police said in a statement.

About 50 people required care in Valencia for injuries or because they had consumed too much alcohol.
