SINGAPORE, August 26 -- A Singapore runner on Sunday died in a half marathon race which kicked off early Sunday at the Esplanade Bridge and was attended by some 70,000 runners.

According to Channel NewsAsia reports, the 25-year-old captain Ho Si Qiu collapsed at the end of the Singapore Bay Run, and an intubation was performed.

When no heart rhythm was shown, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately carried out, but he failed to respond and was sent to the hospital later, the reports said.

Organizers were quoted as saying that safety measures were in place, with 13 medic points set up and over 100 medical personnel deployed.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.
