Chinese Zheng Bo and Gao Ling knocked off seven-seeded Songphon Anukritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul from Thailand to enter the badminton mixed doubles quarterfinals at the 15th Asian Games here on Wednesday.

Zheng and Gao, only paired up three weeks before the Asian Games, were in form in their first ever game together. Asian Games debutant Zheng roared after every successful shot and clinched a 21-16, 21-13 win in 25 minutes.

"I shouted because I wanted to frighten our opponents," said 23- year-old Zheng. "Every point is important to us. I'm happy to pull off my first win at the Asian Games."

Zheng made his first appearance in Doha in the men's team final on Tuesday. Although head coach Li Yongbo was satisfied with Zheng and his partner Guo Zhendong's performance, Zheng was disappointed for the loss in the second doubles game, as he muffed several times in the rubber set.

"I was eager to win yesterday," said Zheng, "but I lost my energy at the last moment. I felt regret for playing an anticlimactic game."

China toppled defending champion South Korea 3-2 to claim the team gold on Tuesday, but Zheng and Guo lost to Lee Jae Jin and Hag Ji Man 17-21, 21-13, 14-21.

Zheng's delight for the win was rebated as he felt their opponents were a little bit weak.

"Frankly, I don't think the Tai seeded pair are formidable," said Zheng, "Zhao Tingting and I defeated them in this year's Hong Kong Open also in straight sets. The man shuttler is good but the female player is week. So I just aimed at the female player to strike."

Talking about his partnership with two-time mixed doubles Olympic champion Gao Ling, Zheng said "I cherish the chance to play together with her. She steers me on the court."

But Zheng, who changed several partners in both the men's and mixed doubles, was not sure whether Gao and he could become long- time partners. "The decision is not up to me. Our team will send the most forceful line-up to important competitions, but I will try my best to hold the opportunity," said Zheng.
