RIO DE JANEIRO, March 23 (Reuters) - Argentina forward Carlos Tevez atoned
for an early penalty miss by scoring the only goal as Brazilian champions
Corinthians beat UANL of Mexico 1-0 in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday.
Fellow Brazilians Goias and Internacional put themselves on the brink of a
place in the last sixteen in the evening's other games.
Goias drew 0-0 away to Argentina's Newell's Old Boys in a bad-tempered clash
which produced three red cards and where police intervened at the final whistle
to prevent players clashing.
Internacional came from two goals behind to beat UNAM 3-2 in the second
Brazil-Mexico clash of the evening.
Corinthians, still looking for a new coach after Antonio Lopes quit two weeks
ago, went level on seven points with Chile's Universidad Catolica after their
Group Four win in Sao Paulo.
Catolica, however, have a better goal difference and have played three games
compared to Corinthians' four.
Tevez, playing his first match since injuring his knee in the 2-0 defeat away
to UANL two weeks ago, quickly made his mark as he won a seventh-minute penalty.
He took the kick himself, only to see his shot saved by Edgar Hernandez.
Tevez was not be denied, however, and scored the only goal in the 27th minute
when he controlled ball with back to goal, made space and scored with a low shot
into corner.
FALLING OVER
Goias, taking part in the tournament for the first time, are all but
mathematically qualified from Group Three after their goalless draw in Rosario.
Goias have ten points from four games, six ahead of Newell's, while The
Strongest (Bolivia) and Union Espanola (Chile) have three points each from three
games.
