China's top energy think-tank chief has outlined a three-step strategic roadmap for the development of the country's renewable energy resources through to 2050. Han Wenke, director-general of the Energy Research Institute under the National Development and Reform Commission, said: "By 2050, over one third of the country's total primary energy consumption should come from renewable energy."
Market forces can play an important, if invisible, role in China's efforts to curb carbon emissions and the potential for carbon trading in the country is huge, according to the chairman of a new initiative aiming to introduce a little US-style environmental know-how across China.
If we're serious about developing low-carbon power sources, we also need to develop a power system that can deliver them -- a flexible and efficient smart grid that will effectively balance our energy consumption with the availability of wind and solar power. That technology is available now, but it needs to be implemented.
