Post-disaster reconstruction in Chengdu is not recovery and construction in a simple sense. The city applied balanced urban-rural development and made substantial progress.
Three years ago, a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province and laid Wenchuan county in ruins. The city of Chengdu also suffered, as several of its counties, namely Dujiangyan, Pengzhou and Chongzhou were also badly hit. However, during the past three years, Chengdu has made tremendous recovery efforts.
Bailu, which took longer than other quake-hit towns and cities in Sichuan province to recover, was careful to rebuild in a way that would make it both more modern and more attractive to outside tourism and investments.
