The Jack Ma Charitable Foundation held its inaugural "best rural teacher" awards ceremony in Sanya, Hainan province, on Jan 17.
The foundation's initiator and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, was on hand to dish out the awards. Some 100 rural teachers from West China were recognized on the night, including 17 from Shaanxi province. Each teacher received a prize of 100,000 yuan ($15,200).
Ma announced that the awards would become an annual event to express gratitude to dedicated providers of rural education.
