Beijing to plan more greenery this year

The city of Beijing plans to add more green space, including 30 greenbelts in parks this year. The green coverage is expected to reach 1,000 hectares,and the city's green coverage ratio is expected to reach 47.4 percent, Beijing Daily reported on Thursday.

The city will build a number of small-sized greenbelts in neighborhoods, mainly in its central districts. Each greenbelt will cover an area ranging from 50 to 100 square meters. About 20 hectares of vacant land in Dongcheng and Xicheng districts will be converted.

Meanwhile, the capital will rebuild urban green landscapes in 100 old communities and 30 hutongs, greening rooftops of 100,000 square meters and vertical landscaping that runs for a total length of 50 kilometers.

Beijing has decided to complete 200 kilometers of its greenway project this year. The construction of forest parks in suburbs will also be accelerated.

The city will continue to carry forward the afforestation project into its rural areas, such as Changping and Tongzhou districts.

Beijing's green area is expected to increase by 360,000 mu (24,000 hectares),bringing its forest coverage rate to 58.4 percent in 2014.
