'Beating the newly-married couple' in Kanshi

For people in Kanshi, Yongding county, Fujian province, January 11 of the lunar calendar is the happiest time of the year. Tens of thousands of people gather in front of Lu's ancestral hall to watch the unique Hakka traditional marriage custom - "beating the newly-married couple".

Over the past 500 years, this folk custom has been popular in this area. On this day, young men and women with the surname Lu that were married last year will wear red and green. Surrounded by a group of young men and women, they will walk hand-in-hand to the grave of Lin Potai, an ancestor of the Lu people.

One patriarch, who stands for fortune, longevity, and prestige, elected by the public will hold the ceremony for the brides and grooms, praying for a thriving family of sons, happiness and well-being.
