With its unique style, Han opera is popular in Hakka-populated areas, including Longyan, Zhangping and other places. It is one of the major local kinds of opera popular in Fujian province.

Opera characters can be divided into four roles, namely Sheng (the positive male role), Dan (the positive female role), Chou (the clown or negative character) and Jing (the supporting male role with a striking character).

The opera mainly employs four musical instruments, the urheen, moon lute, three-stringed lute and four-stringed Chinese lute. Other common musical instruments include the erhu, flute, suona horn, big/small gong, copper gong, bowl gong, tupan, big/small coin board and clamp plate. The opera consists of over 200 traditional theatrical pieces of music.
