Thai PM vows to push through army operations

BANGKOK - It is necessary for the Thai government to keep on with military operation to end "red-shirt" protesters' prolonged rally in central Bangkok in order to restore normalcy, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in a televised address on Saturday night.
Some 24 people have been killed and 211 others wounded since clashes between troops and the protesters broke out Thursday night, the Erawan's Bangkok Emergency Medical Service Center said.

However, "I insist that what the government is doing now is necessary for the national interest. And this is the only way to restore normalcy," Abhisit said.
The troops started to seal off the "red-shirts" fortified encampment late on Thursday, prompting clashes in which Khattiya Sawasdipol, chief military adviser to the protesters, was admitted to hospital after being shot in the head.
The only way to reduce damages and losses is ending the anti- government protest which lasted for two months, Abhisit emphasized.
The government can not allow the Bangkok's residents to be held hostage further by the law offenders and illegal armed group, the prime minister said.
The army operations are aimed to prevent red-shirt reinforcement from joining their fellows at Rathchaprasong Intersection, a main rally site, Abhisit said.
Abhisit also asked the general public to understand any inconveniences which have been caused to them by the ongoing military operations to seal off the anti-government rally site.
Other measures include cutting off water, power, food, transportation and mobile phone signals around the rally site.
