Comment on "Behind the fancy foreign diplomas" (China Daily, July 15)

The Chinese have a huge need to inflate their egos, and an overseas degree is the surest way to achieve that objective. Their society places a high premium on such degrees, and the "returned scholars" are worshiped on the pedestal as if they are a special breed.

Many countries have their own returned scholars too, but they are never worshiped or given a special place in society, like in China! I can't see how the mere possession of a foreign piece of paper can automatically elevate one to special status. And there is in China a "Returned Scholars Association," an elitist club, no doubt. So what if you are a returned scholar?

No need to strut around and flaunt your label. Be humble and merge with the crowd! If they are that great, their ability will show. There is no need to advertise themselves as "returned scholars." The media should stop using the label "returned scholars" as if they are some sort of geniuses. That way, we can create a more "harmonious society" and lessen the social divide!
