Comment on "Spare tourists from excessive guides" (China Daily, April 14)

As a foreign tourist, I had the opportunity to delight my senses contemplating the sunrise at Huangshan last September. And I think this trip is one of the most complete aesthetic experiences that one can have in China.

I was traveling with a group of friends, but during the exhausting but rewarding climb, we occasionally passed by other guided groups. And having a guide in China can be a bit annoying. Not only because the noisy loudspeakers ruin the almost "Zen" experience, but also because one loses the chance to sit by interesting spots and just spend some time listening to the silence and contemplating the scenery.

In that sense, I somehow miss the Western approach to tourism, which is more assistance than guidance.
