Positive attitudes in administration, rather than passive replies, can better solve the credibility crisis exposed on the Internet, says an article in the Beijing News. Excerpts:
Recently, the People Net website publicized a list evaluating local authorities' response to public opinion on the Internet. Both positive and negative models were marked on the billboard.
The popularity of online public discussion on politics has provided powerful supervision on local administrations. Quick and effective reactions to online criticisms help restore administrative credibility. Passive replies, however skilful they might be, are not enough to fundamentally solve the problem. The arrogant attitude of local officials is the trigger for such actions, but the fundamental reason lies in the unfettered violation of public interest by the abuse of power. Conflicts cannot be dispelled unless the root causes are sought.
It is better to take precautions against these problems rather than mend the fold after a sheep is lost. With public interest as their top priority, local governments can expect the eradication of similar incidents.
