Recently a local official responded to calls for financial disclosure. His wealth surprised many people and ought to be investigated, says an article in the Beijing News. Excerpts:
Zhang Li, a local bureau chief in Hunan province, was the first to respond to calls for financial disclosure. Included in his list of property: five apartments, two cars, a large stock portfolio, and bank savings.
Zhang's disclosure was not voluntary; it came in response to media reports. Still, it shows in the impact of public demands for financial transparency.
Although apparently not a source of embarrassment to him, Zhang's wealth is troubling. It is obviously beyond the means of a salaried official.
The ultimate goal of financial disclosure is to prevent even the appearance of corruption. In the interest of justice, the authorities should investigate Zhang Li.
