Peace, development and cooperation will continue to define China's diplomacy this year.

The message from Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi shows that China is completely aware of its global responsibilities.

China's emergence as a responsible power and trustworthy partner committed to multilateralism and common prosperity has been increasingly recognized in the world today.

As the world's largest developing country, China needs to maintain a peaceful international environment to bring welfare to its 1.3 billion people. China's success in tackling its difficulties and challenges on its path to development will bring benefits to the world at large. The important role China has played in reviving the global economy from a full-blown meltdown proves this point.

In recent years, however, there have been wild speculations and buzzwords about China's long-term agenda in world affairs. Some regard China as a rival or even treat her as a potential threat.

There are two explanations for this unfavorable interpretation of China's role in the world. One lies in the misunderstandings and miscommunication stemming from different cultural backgrounds and political systems. Another relates to the hidden agendas of some countries that are in desperate need of an excuse to expand their own defense forces.

As China's national strength grows, it is understandable that the rest of the world wants to know how the country will project its newfound power onto the international arena.

But the misinterpretation of China's growing influence in the world that is based on rivalry rather than the understanding that China seeks world peace and development is in no one's best interest. It could sow distrust and broaden the gap of differences.

It is our belief that Chinese diplomats on all fronts, in their role as envoys of peace, will continue to work for intensified communications and interactions with governments and peoples from all countries. We hope their strenuous efforts will help more people in the world see China through a more objective and sensible lens.
