IIham Sabeer, deputy secretary and mayor of Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, together with other leaders from the city, visited the northwest branch of SINOPEC to look into its operation and management activities and help it solve some current problems though face-to-face communication on June 7.

The northwest branch, with its headquarter and research institute located in the Urumqi High-tech Zone, mainly deals with exploration for and exploitation and sale of oil and gas. It is SINOPEC’s second largest crude oil producer and one of China’s top ten onshore oilfield enterprises .

Hu Guangjie, the director of the northwest bureau and the deputy party secretary, outlined the basic information of the branch to the research panel, and described its operation and production situation including certain problems evident from January to May.

Gao Feng, the deputy mayor of Urumqi and secretary of the high-tech zone, noted that Urumqi had always regarded the northwest company as its key enterprise and appreciated its contributions to the economic and social development of the city. But influenced by falling international oil prices in the past 2 years, the industrial added value of the company plummeted in 2015. The city and regional governments hope that the company will maintain its production quota and cooperate with the central government to localize state-run enterprises. He added that the high-tech zone will go all out to support the company’s smooth development.

IIham Sabeer, deputy secretary and mayor of Urumqi, said the company overcame the difficulty posed by the decreased petroleum price in 2015 and met its production targets with its crude oil production totaling 7.03 m tons. But the great economic downward pressure in 2016 is a big challenge to the company. The autonomous region has proposed exact requirements for maintaining economic development which demand common efforts by the company and the authority. The municipal party community and government will support the enterprise to solve any problems that may occur based on existing national and local policies.
