Big Green Valley, an ecological park in the Economic and Technological Development Zone in Urumqi city, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region will start operating from May 1 the forestry bureau announced on April 20, uetd.gov.cn reported.

The date is a month earlier than anticipated and means people will be able to view the park's peonies, including its Chinese herbaceous peonies, over the May Day holiday.

Around 500 staff have worked five days and nights in order to make sure the opening is on schedule.

The Big Green Valley has brought in peonies, dahlias and other exquisite flowers. More than 280,000 flowers and 280,000 bushes have been planted, creating around 200,000 square meters of cultivated area.

Some parts of the park are still under construction. For example, the sports-themed park is expected to open only partially in September. Sports items such as roller skating and rock climbing will be available for teenagers by that time, said Hao Jianjiang, vice director of the forestry bureau.

Bus No 98 and No 5201 travel to the park. The park cannot be accessed by car, and pets are not allowed.

Located in a high-speed railway area, Big Green Valley covers 800,000 square meters of which 729,800 are green. Its total investment has reached 300 million yuan ($46.32 million).
