Efforts at environmental improvement paid off in Xinjiang

Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone, at Toutunhe district in Urumqi city has met the national standard of garden city with its green coverage ratio reaching 39 percent, said Ding Tongzu, the vice director of the district.

Toutunhe district is located in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and the district government has put approximately 1.5 billion yuan ($240 million) fund into greening projects.

So far, Toutunhe district has planted saplings in 1,000 hectares of land with more than 80 gardens and greenbelts have been added, informed Hao Jian, the vice director of Toutunhe district's administration of forestry landscape.

Officials also said that a parking lot featuring on parking and ecological protection is expected to open this September, which will be the first ecological parking lot in the city.

The efforts put in for environmental improvement were paid off, as many locals are now enjoying new living environment. Zhang Lixia, a resident said, "I take a walk in the ecological park after work every day and the amazing sceneries in the park make me feel happy."
