The Puhe River urban greenway project, a key project in Shenbei new district in Shenyang city -- capital of Northeast China's Liaoning province -- has begun construction, according to a statement released by the district's construction bureau on Aug 3.

Officials said the district is aiming to build an urban greenway, incorporating existing running paths along the Puhe River, to provide locals and sports enthusiasts with an ideal jogging and strolling venue.

Under the plan, four major squares and a multi-functional waterfront landscape corridor will be built along the river's greenway, covering an area of about 260,000 square meters, to show off the environmental beauty of the river.

The squares -- to be called the Youth Sports Square, Puhe River Urban Greenway Square, Children Entertainment Square and the Zhile Sports Square -- will complete construction of their major structures before Oct 1.

Youth Sports Square

Located on the south bank of the river and to the west of Daoyi Street in Shenbei new district, the square will include basketball courts, table tennis courts, youth sports venues, recreation facilities and footpaths in the woods.

Puhe River Urban Greenway Square

Located on the south bank of the Puhe River and between Shengjing Street and Daoyi Street, the square will include trestle bridges, waterfront wooden plank walkways and platforms near the water -- forming a waterfront greenway and a high-altitude trestle bridge viewing zone.

There will also be six wooden structures in the architectural style of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties established on the south side of the waterfront wooden plank walkways.

Children's Entertainment Square

Located in the former abandoned barbecue area on the north bank of the Puhe River, the square will include climbing facilities, chairs, stone benches, guide signs, trampolines, seesaws and swings for kids to relax and play.

Zhile Sports Square

Located on the south bank of the Puhe River and on the west side of Lingyuan Street, the square will include a children's playground and various facilities for exercise and other activities, with the aim of creating a recreational activity area suitable for all ages.
