Northeast China’s Liaoning province reported two new COVID-19 cases on May 13, according to officials at the local health authority.

The provincial health commission said that the two new domestically transmitted cases were both reported by Shenyang, Liaoning’s provincial capital and one confirmed case was previously an asymptomatic case.

By the end of May 13, the province had reported a total of 149 confirmed cases, including 144 that had been treated and discharged from hospitals, three still in hospital and two fatalities.

A total of 265 close contacts of confirmed cases in the province are now under medical observation, according to the authority.

Shenyang officials quickly moved to expand measures to prevent and control the spread of the epidemic.
According to the local government, since April 22 people who came to Shenyang from Jilin province’s Jilin city -- now under lockdown due to COVID-19 cases -- needed to be in quarantine and observation for 21 days, while three nucleic acid tests were performed. In addition, those previously quarantined at home must be transferred to centralized quarantine immediately.

In addition, there has been a change for the city’s grade 11 and 8 students, as well as some grades of vocational school students, who were scheduled to return to school on May 15 -- as well as grade 10 and 7 students due back at class on May 18.

Officials announced their return has now been postponed due to the epidemic and the specific time for their return will be issued at a later date.
