Shenyang, capital of Northeast China's Liaoning province, has urged all passengers since Feb 6 to register with their real names when taking public transportation -- including buses, metros, tramcars, and taxis, officials said.

The move was highly praised by the Ministry of Transport and rapidly promoted to cities nationwide, according to information released by the Shenyang transport agency.

Such initiatives can track passengers' routes -- to ensure that suspected patients of the novel coronavirus can be traced. This will effectively prevent and control the spread of the virus, according to officials.

QR codes are put up on public vehicles and passengers need to scan the code to register their real names via mobile phones. People who do not carry mobile phones or have difficulties in using phones can ask drivers or other staff members to help register the information.

To date, Shenyang has printed and put up more than 80,000 QR codes on public vehicles and more than 500,000 registrations have been made.

Being the first city to urge real-name registration for public transport, Shenyang received attention from the Ministry of Transport.

Officials said that such moves have been promoted in other cities across the country, including Changchun, Nanjing, Xiamen, Yangzhou, Chengdu, Luoyang, Xianning, Dongguan, Nanning and others.
