Shenyang, capital of northeastern Liaoning province, urged all passengers from Feb 6 to register with their real names when taking public transportation, including buses, metros, tramcars, and taxis.

Officials said that the move aims to supervise passengers’ routes to ensure that suspected patients of the novel coronavirus can be traced, so as to effectively prevent and control the spread of the virus.

QR codes will be put up on public vehicles, and passengers should scan the code to register their real names via mobile phones. Those who don’t bring phones can also be registered with the help of drivers or other staff members.

Officials explained that the information will be stored on a dedicated server and is only used for traces for the prevention and control of the outbreak.
