Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, is making great efforts to protect the city’s historic and cultural sites, according to a news conference held on Dec 18.

The city is building itself into a tourism hotspot featuring its long history and rich culture, according to local officials.

With a city-building history of more than 2,300 years, Shenyang is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and is also a representative city witnessing China’s modern industrial development, they added.

The city has recently launched a three-year plan to protect its historic and cultural sites, under which from 2019 to 2021 Shenyang will renovate and protect a total of 88 cultural projects.

Officials said these sites would feature the culture of the Qing Dynasty, the culture during the Republic of China (1912-1949), anti-war history and industrial culture.

In 2019, the city started work on renovating 28 sites and conducting archaeological excavations of one site, according to officials.

Shenyang city will increase its financial support for protection and renovation work on historic and cultural sites, as well as encourage the investment of social funds to back the work, officials added.
