The keenly anticipated sixth Shenyang open taekwondo championships will be held at the Liaoning Gymnasium in Shenyang, Liaoning’s provincial capital on Jan 11-13, according to the organizers.
Some 3,000 contestants from all over the world will participate in the event which the Shenyang Taekwondo Association will use as a platform to promote the taekwondo in Shenyang, according to officials.
They said that taekwondo is currently one of the most popular sports in Shenyang, with nearly 100,000 people regularly training.
The Shenyang Taekwondo Association, established in July this year, provides training for coaches, referees, and teenage enthusiasts every month, according to Chen Ling, president of the association.
Chen said that the training for referees and coaches is free of charge, to help popularize taekwondo in the city.
Shenyang now has more than 400 taekwondo training centers, attended by a large number of teenagers.
To promote it in Shenyang, the association will help organize more taekwondo events and train more athletes, coaches and referees, for municipal, provincial and even national taekwondo teams, Chen added.
