Li Liangui bacon pancake, a well-known food in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, has been awarded 30 honors over the past 35 years, according to local reports.
The dish was created by Li Zhi from Hebei province in 1842, and years later his son, Li Guangzhong, (whose infant name was Liangui) improved the recipe after being inspired by a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Lishu county, Jilin province.
Smoking pork with TCM ingredients made the pancake crispy and fatty but not greasy.
In 1950, Li Liangui’s third-generation inheritor, Li Chunsheng, opened the first pancake restaurant on Zhongjie Street in Shenyang, which proved popular among the locals.
Since the 1960s, Li Chunsheng and his inheritor, Li Fuzhou, have trained more than 3,500 people from across the country, aiming to promote the dish more widely.
Over the past four decades, the Li Liangui bacon pancake has won 30 honors for its long history and delicate flavors, including time-honored brand in Shenyang in 2008, time-honored brand in Liaoning province in 2013, Shenyang municipal intangible cultural heritage item in 2015, Shenyang famous trademark in 2015, and Liaoning’s excellent tourist snack in 2017.
The bacon pancake is a must-try for visitors to Shenyang.
