There was excitement as the 7th ginkgo festival at Liaoning University kicked off at its Chongshan campus in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province on Oct 24, university officials said.

The gingko biloba tree, also known as the maindenhair tree, is native to China and widely cultivated for various uses in tradition medicine and as a source of food. Its unique leaves turn a brilliant yellow in the fall of each year.

Also kicking off on the day at the university was the 4th “silver spoon” international food festival, where visitors can sample food from South Korea, Japan, Russia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mongolia and other countries.

Organizers said that during the ginkgo festival, Liaoning University Publishing House will display excellent books, and the university’s trade union committee will organize a photography exhibition.

Initiated in the fall of 2013, Liaoning University’s annual ginkgo festival is proving popular among visitors. It attracts a large number of visitors each year, officials said.
