The 2019 National Public Ice and Snow Festival kicked off at Shenyang Olympic Park in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, on Aug 3, with participation of more than 1,200 people in the opening ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, Ni Huizhong, director of the winter sports management center at the General Administration of Sport of China, said that a series of activities will be held during the festival, such as sports contests and training classes, to get more people involved in winter sports.
Initiated in 2018, the festival was launched by the center, featuring ice and snow-themed activities held in summer. Last year, more than 200 activities were held in over 40 cities around the country, with direct participation of more than 300,000 people, mostly teenagers.
