As the transport hub of Northeast China, Shenyang features a complete transport system including aviation, railways, highways, a two-line subway system, public buses and taxis, and modern trams.

Aviation

Shenyang Taoxian International Airport, the largest airport in Northeast China, sits 22 kilometers from downtown Shenyang in the central part of Liaoning province and serves several city clusters including Shenyang, Fushun, Benxi, Liaoyang, Anshan, and Tieling.

The airport has more than 120 domestic air routes to most major Chinese cities (including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Sanya, Chengdu, Kunming, Qingzhou, Hangzhou, Xiamen and Xi'an) as well as international routes to Pyongyang, Seoul, Osaka, Sapporo, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Khabarovsk. Along with flights to nearby Hong Kong, the airport also facilitates flights to Western European countries like Germany and France.

Airport Shuttle Buses: Passengers can board airport shuttle buses from the Aviation Ticket Center at Maluwan (No 117 Zhonghua Road). The shuttle to Shenyang Taoxian International Airport departs every 30 minutes with tickets costing 15 yuan ($2.27) per passenger for the 45-60-minute trip.

Railway

Shenyang is the largest railway hub in Northeast China and is home to two railway stations, Shenyang Railway Station and Shenyang North Railway Station. Most long-distance trains, including those on the Beijing-Harbin and Beijing-Jilin railways, depart from Shenyang North Railway Station.

Shenyang North Railway Station: Located on Beizhan Road in Shenhe district, Shenyang North Railway Station is one of the largest railway stations in Liaoning province, and one of the five largest railway hubs in China. The main railway station servicing the city of Shenyang, it was built in the 1990s and stands near the North Shenyang Government Hall. The station has lines to most major Chinese cities, with the journey to Beijing taking five to eight hours.

Shenyang Railway Station: Shenyang Railway Station is located on Taiyuan Street in Heping district. Most trains at Shenyang Railway Station operate on lines connecting neighboring cities within Liaoning province and other nearby regions.

Highways

Shenyang has a convenient and highly developed highway system. National Highways Nos 101, 102, 202, and 304 meet in Shenyang city. The Shenda (Shenyang-Dalian) Highway, Jingshen (Beijing-Shenyang) Highway, Shenha (Shenyang-Harbin) Highway, Shenfu (Shenyang-Fushun) Highway and Shenben (Shenyang-Benxi) Highway all pass through Shenyang. There are more than 10 coach stations in Shenyang providing express services to Beijing, Yingkou, Dalian, Changchun, Harbin, Anshan, Jinzhou, Fushun, Benxi, Dandong and other cities.

Subway

There are two metro lines running through Shenyang. Metro Line 1 (east-west) began operations in 2010, with Metro Line 2 (north-south) following in 2012. The city has plans to construct another eight subway lines by 2020 to better service the city.

Bus

Shenyang's bus system provides convenience with more than 160 routes and almost 600 vehicles carrying passengers throughout the city. Most buses in Shenyang offer automated ticketing with a per-passenger ticket price of 2 yuan (30 cents). Terminal III at Shenyang Taoxian International Airport is the largest bus terminal in Northeast China.

Taxis

Most of the taxis in Shenyang are Volkswagen Santana and Jetta Saloon vehicles. Taxi fares start at 8 yuan within 3 km then add another 1.82 yuan per km. Fares change to 2.7 yuan per km when over 15 km during daytime and, in the evening, the base price is 9 yuan for the first 3 km and an extra 2 yuan for each additional km (rising to 2.94 yuan per km over 15 kms). Air-conditioned taxi fares during summer match nighttime rates.

Hunnan modern trams

In Dec 2011, the Shenyang city government announced a plan to rebuild a modern tram network of four lines totaling 60 km in Hunnan district. The new tram network commenced operations in 2013. The airport is served by line 2.
