The city of Datong, Shanxi province, was granted the China Five-star Charity City title, at the 2012 China Ningxia Yellow River Shangu Charity Fair, which was held in the city of Ningxia, recently.

Datong's charitable efforts have undergone rapid development in recent years, moving away from traditional activities such as poverty alleviation and rescue and relief work, and on to other areas such as education, public health, environmental protection, new village construction, culture, and sports. The charitable work plays a positive role in dealing with social problems, promoting equality, and building a harmonious society.
