Linfen in Shanxi province will hold a culture and tourism festival from June 9 to 15, according to a press conference held in Beijing on May 13.

The festival will take place in the city's Yaodu district where the legendary Emperor Yao (c.24th-23th century BC) located his capital.

With a theme of tracing history and pursuing dreams, the first Yaodu Culture and Tourism Festival will consist of 12 themed events including, seminars, performances, and exhibitions.

Government officials and academics are keen to promote the unique cultural and tourism resources of Yaodu district.

"Yaodu has its own unique cultural charms, and is a cradle of Chinese civilization," said Zhang Yiwu, director of the Cultural Resource Research Center at Peking University.

In recent years, Yaodu district has been integrating the development of its traditional culture and tourism to build a demonstration area for holistic tourism. Meanwhile, the district has focused on developing historical sites related to Emperor Yao to improve its profile as one of the locations where Chinese civilization originated.

In a further boost to tourism, the city will host the 2018 Shanxi Tourism Development Conference in September.
