In order to seize the opportunities offered by the 2018 National Conference on Tourism Work, Shanxi held a tourism business-matching and promotion event targeting foreign tourists in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, Jan 9.

The directors of the Department of Tourism Promotion and International Liaison, Department of Affairs on Tourism of Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan and overseas offices of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) held talks with six travel agencies in Shanxi at the event, expressing a willingness to support and help Shanxi travel agencies in promoting their services to foreign markets.

Shanxi has been developing tourism into a pillar industry for economic growth. According to the No 42 document released by the State Council in 2017, Shanxi is expected to develop itself as a national holistic tourism demonstration area by 2020. Shanxi also decided to promote tourism brands featuring the Yellow River, the Great Wall, and Taihang Mountain at the 2017 Shanxi Tourism Development Conference.

In 2017, 953,700 overseas visitors came to Shanxi, representing year-on-year growth of 6 percent. The international business, information and cultural communications brought by inbound tourism have advanced the opening-up of the province.

Next, Shanxi will boost its profile overseas and be active in various tourism events, such as the Great Wall theme promotions in Germany and Austria organized by CNTA, the Australian Tourism Exchange, and JATA Tourism EXPO Japan.

In addition, Shanxi will establish overseas tourism marketing centers in 10 major tourism source countries including Japan, Singapore, and the United States and tourism marketing centers in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
